Special Session on Modelling and Analysis of the Knowledge Society in Times of Crisis

Selected papers from the special session will be considered for publication in the International Journal of Engineering Business Management, indexed in Scopus & Thomson Reuters: Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI)

Background

The recent economic downturn forced policy makers to pay more attention to the means of creating a society more resistant to crisis. Knowledge society is one which becomes more resilient to economic downturn and other forms of crisis, by fostering intelligent decision making,  taking into account bounded rationality and unintended consequences of human actions.

However, intelligent decisions cannot be made without a previous thorough analysis of a number of relevant qualitative and quantitative factors. In order to attain the goal of sustainability and prosperity joint action of analysts, managers and policy makers is needed. It is also important to understand that individuals, businesses and financial institutions jointly contribute to the economic movement. Operational research, simulation modelling, statistical modelling, and recently data science allows the in-depth insight into the dynamic and long term changes of contemporary society that is under pressure.

Theme

The theme of this Special Collection is focused on establishing the knowledge society in times of crisis, with the support of various modelling approaches, including operational research, statistical and simulation modelling and data science.

Topics

Authors are invited to submit papers that contribute to fulfilling the following aims of the Special Session:
  • To investigate and clarify the nature of knowledge society in times of crisis, especially from the perspective of knowledge as the societal value ;
  • To extend the empirical evidence about the impact of economic shocks to overall economic performance;
  • To identify the drivers of knowledge society in times of crises;
  • To provide a showcase of case studies which discuss the role of modelling as the leverage for increasing the effectiveness of decision making in times of crises;
  • To motivate researchers to enhance theoretical frameworks and models of knowledge society in times of crises;
  • To motivate researchers to investigate the role of innovation and creativity as a means to sustainability and prosperity in times of crisis.
